WEEK 2
Panic and Anxiety

External Anxiety

External anxiety occurs in life no matter who we are. This type of anxiety is generated or caused by something real, something that is going on in your life. There is a valid reason to feel this type of anxiety. It could be brought on by something as traumatic as someone trying to physically hurt you. It also could be initiated by something as simple as entering a crowded room or by your concern about a future event.

Internal Anxiety

Internal Anxiety can be controlled. This type of anxiety is generated or caused by your concern about your external anxiety and the way it has made you feel. You only experience internally generated anxiety if you choose to. By choosing to be less affected by external events and externally generated anxiety, you minimize internally generated anxiety.

Life is stressful. Both good and bad situations can cause anxiety. Marriage, low self-esteem, career change, having a baby - all of these situations can cause externally generated anxiety. This is OK. This stress will bring on body symptoms - racing heart, bewilderment, dizziness and the like. It is normal to feel this way. What the anxious person does at this time is to add internally generated anxiety that really has no validity. That's correct. We simply blow it out of proportion.

"What's wrong with me? Am l going to faint? Am l going to lose control and do something stupid?" These are not valid thoughts because they are not true. There is no reason to worry about these things. It is the internal anxiety that causes us to get into trouble. It's from this internally generated anxiety that we get obsessive and carried away - scaring ourselves with untrue thoughts and increasing our body symptoms.

You will learn how to stop this internal anxiety, but for now, give yourself permission to have externally generated anxiety, tell yourself why you're having it. Remind yourself "It can't stay with me for long." Tell yourself it's okay and let it pass.

(From P. 40 of the workbook.)

What causes a panic or anxiety attack?

The answer is really very simple and quite obvious. YOU CAUSE IT. Nothing outside of you gives you a panic attack. YOU cause it, and here's how:

It all begins with you. After you experience some form of external anxiety, you then become concerned with your body feelings and symptoms. You think about these feelings to the point where you actually start to scare yourself with them. This creates internally generated anxiety. Your body senses your fear and releases chemical stimulants into your system to strengthen your body so it can fight or flee from whatever it is that's causing the fear, whether real or imagined. These chemicals include adrenaline, sodium lactate and cortisol.

It's important to understand that your body releases these chemicals whether the fear is real or imagined. As your anxiety level grows, more chemicals are released into your system. this magnifies your anxiety even more. This causes you to enter the second stage of anxiety, the endogenous stage.

Now your main concern is no longer the particular problem that brought on the stress. Instead, it's the "weird feelings" and "strange symptoms" that your body is experiencing. You become so caught up in wondering "What's wrong with me? " that you become bewildered and confused. So much so, that all your defenses are down, your sensitivity level is up and you go into panic. The anxiety seems overwhelming. You fear you will lose control. There is one important thing to remember at this time: You will not lose control, nor will you go insane.

It's important to understand that your mind and body can only maintain this state of anxiety for a few hours at best, then you may become extremely fatigued and depressed. This is a good thing. That's why you can say to yourself " It's only anxiety, it will go away. " Can you see how knowledge can help you with your condition?

Next we'll talk about external and internal anxiety.

Here I am in Marco Island Fl, November 2004, putting the finishing touches on my workbook course ... Achieving Balance in my life.

Guidelines to Help Alleviate Your Anxiety:

* Give yourself permission to feel anxious about whatever it is that is bothering you or causing you stress. "Of course I feel anxious about this problem, anyone would. But how much anxiety is too much?"

* Recognize and admit that you are experiencing feelings of stress, anxiety, and/or depression.

* Try to pinpoint what it is you are anxious about. Where is the stress coming from? What happened today? What were you thinking about before you went to bed? Write it down!

* Are you blaming someone else for your stress, anxieties, unhappiness, depression, poor health, lack of success or whatever? How can you take responsibility for yourself and make some positive changes?

* Listen to the dialogue of those around you. Is someone around you being negative and dragging you down with them? If so, how could you change your reaction to their negative attitude so that you would be less affected by them?

* If you do know what it is that is bothering you, what can you do to eliminate or minimize the situation in some way so that it isn't so stressful? How can you help yourself reduce the unnecessary stress?

* Most importantly, how can you react differently so you won't be so affected by this situation?

* Listen to the dialogue within yourself. Are you filling yourself full of negative thoughts about a certain situation? What could you say to yourself that would feel more comforting?

* Become aware of your body's symptoms and reactions to stress. Don't let them scare you, let them talk to you.

* Are you overwhelming yourself with "shoulds" and high expectations? If so, which ones would you eliminate?

* Give yourself positive reinforcement for even the smallest accomplishments.
